How should you choose between basic VI rules and brand applications?

How should you choose between basic VI rules and brand applications?

Establish reusable identity rules, select applications from actual uses and test them with real content before handover.

A visual identity list includes vehicles, umbrellas, paper cups and bags, while the business currently needs sales PDFs, a website introduction and exhibition material. Removing items feels incomplete; producing everything may leave unused files in a folder.

Establish the basic rules affecting recognition, select applications from near-term business needs, and use real content to check whether the rules work. Basic visual identity, or VI, explains how logos, colours and type are used. Applications explain how those elements work on a specific carrier. The order matters, and feedback runs both ways.

Resolve choices that recur in everyday work

Someone creating a new page should be able to find the right logo version, how to handle a dark background, how headings differ from body text, where images go and which positions can change.

Basic guidelines therefore need common lockups, clear space, colour roles, type hierarchy and useful correct and incorrect examples. If a company already has a stable mark, retain the effective parts and add missing combinations or explanations rather than redesigning everything to complete a list.

ZHAMORE focuses on information roles and relationships. Equal levels remain related, headings connect with their content, and images have a clear job. Exact sizes and distances still need checking for each channel and dimension. Copying print numbers directly to a phone page does not establish equivalent readability.

Test the guidelines against a frequently used document. Could someone taking over find the assets and continue the work? Missing answers indicate rules or instructions to add.

Select applications from real upcoming tasks

List confirmed business activities and the materials customers will encounter. An exhibition involves on-site identification, product explanation and later forwarding. Primarily online conversations may need a website, sales forwarding version and regularly used images.

The following hypothetical manufacturer will exhibit soon, has usable business cards and has no vehicle-wrapping plan.

Compare frequency, actual timing and rework cost. Check frequently used material early, review items approaching production, and retain outputs already working. Different businesses produce different priorities; they need not use the same merchandise package.

Test basic rules with different content

Initial samples need enough variation. A narrow area, a square area and an information-rich page can test lockups, recognition and long-form reading respectively.

Insert real product names, photographs and full paragraphs. Does a long name feel cramped? Does a photograph conflict with the main colour? Can captions still be found as specifications grow? These questions are more useful than placeholder approval.

In the hypothetical project, the booth graphic can use large type and a concise claim, while the sales PDF expands models and evidence. They share the logo, core identity and explanation without requiring identical sizes or text volume.

Locate the specific cause of a sample problem. A tiny profile image may require a small-size logo; excessive content may require a new information order; a process that cannot reproduce thin lines may require a production variant. Return local issues to their conditions to protect other valid applications.

Describe deliverables precisely enough to use

“Brochure application” might mean a single direction sample, an editable template or complete production files. Ask which stage each item reaches, who will use it and what remains to do.

A specific item could be a sales introduction template using approved heading and body levels, replaceable product-image positions and a phone-forwarding example. If only a direction sample is provided, describe what it tests. Further content and production follow the actual task.

In an integrated brand project, basic guidelines and agreed touchpoints should support each other. Whether a package, website or full channel document is produced depends on the specific scope. Appearing on a reference list does not mean it is included.

Ask the actual user to complete an update

At handover, give sales or operations a clear entry point. Ask them to find the correct template, replace one real passage and product image, then export for the actual carrier. Where they have to ask again, add the answer to the template or instructions.

This is use and feedback within the brand loop. Visual rules enter real material, and the resulting problems return to the relevant rule and sample.
